Nike has a clear-cut goal when it comes to their new collection, SPACE HIPPIE. The brand has decided to manufacture footwear comprised of reusable materials, challenging the norm of the sneaker industry through the commendable vision of sustainability. The brand created a new innovative design using reprocessed material that will lessen its carbon footprint.

All aspects of the design, including the packaging, was considered with its environmental impact in mind. The uppers of the shoes are created with what Nike calls ‘Space Waste Yarn’, in which 90% of the materials in the process derive from recycled plastic water bottles, old clothes and fabric scraps. The cushioning of the shoe reconstitutes scraps created from the production of Nike’s famous shoe, the Vaporfly 4s. The sole of the shoe then is made from a blend of 15% recycled rubber and their typical Nike foam, called ‘Crater Foam’.

The Nike Space Hippies hold true to the brand’s vision and are truly trash. The Space Hippie 04s are available in two colorways, the first colorway comprises of a summit white mid-sole, soft dim grey upper and a hyper crimson red for the Nike symbol. The second colorway consists of a grey midsole, smoke grey, and volt black upper as well as neon green for the swoosh symbol.
